                         YSBA Select Season Finals

In what seems like very rapid succession, the season has come to a close and we have named three of our four representatives to head to the SOBA Provincials.

Mosquito

The regular season ended on Wednesday August 18 with Markham in first place and Newmarket in second.  126 of the scheduled 128 games were played for a great completion rate of over 98%.  Teams and managers are to be congratulated for the effort is completing their scheduled games.

The playoffs were hosted by Uxbridge on the weekend of August 20-22.  All 8 teams were entered and the final game came down to Markham playing Thornhill.  Thornhill, the fifth place finisher in the regular season had a wonderful weekend to reach the final but wound up losing to this years YSBA champ the Markham Mariners.  Congratulations to Markham, coached by Dave Houghton, and we all certainly wish them well in the upcoming Provincial championship on the Labour Day weekend.

Peewee

The season ended on August 15 with Stayner finishing in top spot and Uxbridge in second.  In this Division, 100% of the 90 season games were completed before the playoffs.  Once again, congratulations are extended to the team coaches and managers for rearranging games when needed.

The playoffs were hosted by Newmarket on the weekend of August 20-22.  All 6 teams were entered and the final came down to Stayner playing Uxbridge.  These two teams had a great rivalry throughout the year and this continued in the playoffs.  Stayner was victorious, capping a remarkable season that saw them go undefeated with 15 wins.  Congratulations to Stayner, coached by Gord Zeggil, and we again wish them well in the upcoming Provincial championship.

Bantam update

August 31, 2010

The two remaining teams were able to play the remainder of the tournament beginning Sunday evening August 29.  Aurora (1) beat Bolton to force the ‘if necessary’ game which was played on the following evening.  Again Aurora (1) came out on top and will represent YSBA in the SOBA Provincials on the Labour Day weekend.  Innisfil was selected by SOBA to play and will also compete in the Provincials.  Good luck to both teams.

This concludes play in the 2010 YSBA Select season.  Thanks to all, especially the hosts for the year end tournaments but also all the volunteers who play a part in bringing competitive baseball to the youth of our region.

Midget

The Midget Division concluded one week earlier than the others on August 7.  Once again, 100% of the 70 regular season games were completed before the playoffs.  There were numerous schedule changes required this year due to rain and the drop out of one team early in the season.  Coaches were great in getting new games into the schedule and rearranging others to complete the season.  Collingwood wound up in first place but Georgina, who finished second, could have caught them in a final weekend double header.  All in all, the league was quite competitive this year.

The finals were hosted by Orangeville on the weekend of August 13-15.  The 5 teams competed intensely over the weekend with the final game coming down to Collingwood vs. Barrie, the season’s fourth place finisher.  Collingwood, coached by John Hanna, prevailed and will represent YSBA in the SOBA provincials on the weekend of August 27-29 in Thorold.  We wish Collingwood all the best for their run at a provincial championship

I would like to thank all Select committee members, Select coaches, managers, players and parents for a great season.  I hope to see you all back (and more) in 2011.

Season Update July 15, 2010

With the rains holding off on at least some weekends, the season is progressing well.  Congratulations to the PeeWee Division who have completed and reported 100% of their games to date.  Bantam is close with only 3 games to be played.  Midget also has 3 games missing but there is still some confusion regarding the schedule since the departure of the Newmarket team.  I hope to have this cleared up shortly.  I need some work from the Mosquito Division as I show 7 games with no scores or reschedule.  Please check the web vs. your records and update me.

I do appreciate most of you using the 3 digit game numbers to report scores and changes.  This helps more than you realize.

Playdowns are approaching as you know.  Midget will be played on August 14 and 15 in Orangeville.  The other Divisions will be held the following weekend.  I expect Friday games will be needed in Mosquito and Bantam due to the large number of teams.  So far, only Mosquito is confirmed for Uxbridge.  I am still looking for hosts for PeeWee and Bantam so don’t be shy, let me know as soon as possible.  I can provide details of what is needed when asked.

In preparation for the playdowns I need your rosters by July 31.  Include all players you are likely to use in the playdown weekend including auxiliary players.  Please complete the roster form which can be found on the SOBA website at http://www.soba.ca/Admin/SideMenu/DispSideMenuContentMain.aspx?menuID=234&dipIds=undefined

Please fax this completed form by July 31 to Jeff Swartz, Assistant GM Select at 905-761-8239.

Some have been asking about Direct Entry into the SOBA provincials.  As you know, our champion gets into the provincials in each Division with entry fees covered by YSBA.  Other teams may apply for entry by completing the Team Application form on the same website given above and submitting the entry fee.  If your team wins the championship your entry fee will be returned to you.  It is probably worthwhile to enter if your goal is to compete in the Provincials but I must say that our YSBA teams do not fare well in this process.  But it costs little to give it a try.  Certainly if there is a shortage of teams applying in a Division, your chances increase.

There have been some great stories from this season already.  Let’s keep it going, it will be hockey season soon enough!

Select Coaches and Managers

June 13/10

I ask that all teams take a look at the Division Schedules and provide updates on scores and on games that were postponed by rain.  It would be VERY helpful if you could use the 3 digit game number from the schedule when updating me.  I do want to keep the schedule current and the standings up-to-date but can only do so if you report in a timely manner.

Please send all updates to selectgm@yorksimcoebaseball.com and not my home email.

I have put in all the changes I have (as of 3 PM Sunday June 13).  If a change or score you have reported is not reflected then let me know, I have probably missed it.

A team has departed from Midget and I will provide an updated schedule for them early this week.

2010 Season Schedule and Standings

The Select season schedules, results and current standings are now posted on this web site.  The schedules show both upcoming games and the results from those already played.  The schedules will be as up to date as possible and should be checked against your own team's information frequently.  Game times and locations tend to change a lot especially early in the season and when we get rain outs.

You may wish to ensure parents, grandparents and sponsors are aware of this information.

Wishing all a great season

This is the critical meeting of the year, intended to review the rules of YSBA play and to adjust the schedules that teams have received.  It is imperative that each team be represented to allow for agreement on any changes to the schedule.

It's finally crunch time and the final registrations and payments must be in by April 30. From there, Jeff and I will make draft schedules and arrange for the coaches meetings on May 12 and 13.

Our meeting is set for Tuesday April 27 at 7:30 PM and will be hosted by Christie in Aurora (thank you). Her directions are:

"200 Industrial Parkway in Aurora. It is in a warehouse building directly opposite Lambert Willson Park - instead of turning east down the gravel road that leads to Leisure Complex #3 and #4 diamonds, you turn west into a parking lot and go in the main doors. Everyone needs to sign in at the front desk (liability reasons)."

I will forward the agenda for this meeting shortly. I am attaching the registration form for your convenience (also on the web site). To save you looking around, the fees should be payable to YSBA and are $275 per team (all divisions). YSBA SOBA Qualifying tournament fees are $190 for Rookie to PeeWee and $250 Bantam and Midget. Please bring a cheque with your registration forms. I thank those who have already mailed me the forms and cheques or emailed the registration forms.

There is still some doubt in Rookie. For Barrie and Markham, please bring a form and separate cheque for your Rookie teams. If we have another 2 teams enter by the 30th, there will be a loop. If not, I will destroy the cheques. I am sorry but there appears to be only 1 team interested in Junior Select again this year.

The latest spreadsheet has been updated based on partial responses from my email of 2 weeks ago. It is also attached. There are still several "P"

potential teams. Italics indicate I have not heard from the local.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Select Rule Changes at Provincial Level -- March 29, 2010

Last evening the SOBA Board approved rule changes for the 2010 (2011) season.  The exact wording will come from the Secretary but this is what I understood

Pitching
1.  For 2010 SOBA Provincials, the OBA pitch count rules will be used.
2.  For 2010 SOBA Sanctioned tournaments, pitch count rules will be the default although locals can request the use of innings pitched and will be approved for 2010 only.  Tournament organizers will have to let potential entrants know if they go this route
3. 2010 Intact House League rules will stay the same for innings pitched due to the limit of 5 runs per inning.  It will be monitored and perhaps changed next year.

Stealing - Mosquito
1.  No lead offs until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand for SOBA Provincials, Sanctioned tournaments and IHL

Bats
1.  Implement metal bat drop rule of -3 for 2011 at Midget and older.  No change for 2010 due to cost implications.

Rookie Ball
1.  Time may be requested by any player in the infield in possession of the ball.  Time will be granted at the umpire's discretion.

For more information, see your local Select Convenor

Season Update March 14, 2010

You will find the 2009 season statistics will soon be gone from our website.  In the Handouts/Forms section I have posted the 2010 Team Registration Form, the 2010 by-laws and the 2010 Season Outline.

Registrations are not due until April 30.  But please work with your Select Convenor (or VP) in your local to complete the forms as early as possible and ensure parks are allocated to Select games.

A reminder to the Select convenors to attend the SOBA Rules forum on March 28.  I will send details by email or check the SOBA website.  The SOBA site is having problems with its web provider and may be slow in updating information.

Any questions please send to me at
selectgm@yorksimcoebaseball.com or Jeff Swartz at jammss@gmail.com

Thanks to all that attended our first Select Committee meeting of 2010.  Twelve locals were represented.  From a preliminary count of possible Select teams, the numbers are looking good.  In total we have 32 teams that are fairly certain and another 14 that are possible.  Last year we had 27 teams in total so it looks like a second year of growth for Select in YSBA.
